A Silver Spring man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for his wife’s murder.

Dennis Hinnant Jr., 30, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his wife, 28-year-old Taresha Pendarvis, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO).

It is the maximum penalty for second-degree murder under state law, according to MCSAO. Hinnant Jr. was found guilty of second-degree murder in May.

According to county police at the time of arrest last year, in Feb. 2023 Hinnant Jr. walked into the Rockville City Police Station and asked to speak with a homicide detective. He said that officers would find his wife’s dead body at their home on Lanier Drive, according to police. Officers responded to the home and found Pendarvis with trauma to her body, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to MCSAO, Pendarvis was stabbed multiple times and strangled with a belt. A statement of charges says Hinnant Jr. told a detective they were arguing over a potential divorce.
