Silver Spring Ranked Best Place to Live for Families

According to several Montgomery County officials, the world is about to find out what residents here already know – Silver Spring is a great place for families to live.

Fortune Magazine chose Silver Spring as the best in the country in that category for its schools, hospitals, financial health, resources for older adults and strong sense of community.

As explained in the article, magazine staff analyzed more than 2,000 cities, reviewing almost 200 categories.

Executive Marc Elrich called the rating “an impressive accolade.”

“Silver Spring’s top ranking as a family-friendly home speaks volumes about the quality of life we offer,” Elrich wrote in a statement.

“We have excellent educational opportunities, safe neighborhoods and abundant recreational facilities, including our new Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center. Additionally, the County’s outstanding public schools, well-maintained parks and community centers create a nurturing environment where children and their families can thrive academically, socially and physically,” he wrote.

Elrich added, “In Silver Spring, children grow up learning to appreciate and celebrate differences, preparing them to become global citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. The area also has numerous diverse restaurants offering cuisines from around the world.”

Equally excited is Jacob Newman, director of Silver Spring’s Regional Service Center.

“We are thrilled to share a wave of exciting news that has put Silver Spring in the national spotlight! Our beloved community has been named the #1 spot on FORTUNE Magazine’s list of Best Places for Families to Live in America! This monumental recognition highlights our community’s unparalleled dedication to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment for families.”

Council Vice President Kate Stewart, whose district encompasses downtown Silver Spring, thanked the magazine on social media “for confirming what we all know: Silver Spring is the number one place in America to live for families!”

According to Montgomery County police, violent crime in this area has been decreasing but car jackings are rising. Recently, the county council reduced late night hours of some businesses in the downtown area, introduced a drone program to respond to crime more quickly and efficiently and cracked down on car meetups.

According to the magazine piece, a median home in Silver Spring sells for $652,000. The median household income is $106,052. In the magazine’s 2023 survey, Silver Spring ranked third.
