Twins brothers Dermott and Tyler Foley who attend Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring have won the Grand Prize in C-Span’s 2022 StudentCam documentary contest. The boys will share the $5,000 prize for their video about the Cabin John community of Gibson Grove. Titled “What Happened to Gibson Grove?”, the documentary explores the fate of the one-time Black settlement and how it and others like it are threatened by expansion of the U.S. highway system.
Their short almost 7-minute documentary will air on C-Span all day on Thursday, April 21, starting at 6:50 a.m. in the morning.
This is not the first time the Foley twins have won a prize in the C-Span competition. Last year their video about students coping with the pandemic “A Crisis Within A Crisis” won a $1,500 2nd place prize.
More than 3,000 students across the United States submitted 1,400 entries in the competition whose theme was “How Does the Federal Government Impact Your Life.” There were many winners from our area. You can find the complete list and watch the winning entries here.
