Catherine Gaines celebrated her 107th birthday Nov. 9 at Aspenwood Senior Living in Silver Spring.
She told WTOP “I have been very fortunate and blessed that I have been able to live this long.”
Gaines was born in Washington D.C. in 1916. Her life has spanned the 1918 flu pandemic through COVID-19. She served in the Women’s Auxiliary Corp during World War II then spent almost 20 years as a volunteer at Children’s National Hospital in D.C. according to WTOP.
“There is always more to learn,” she said. “Don’t stay home all the time. Go see what’s going on.”
