Silver Spring’s Thea LaFond Returns Home After Winning Olympic Gold

Thea LaFond is back home after winning gold — the first-ever Olympic medal for Dominica, a Caribbean island nation. MCM talked with LaFond at her parents’ house in Silver Spring, where she built a gym in their basement during the pandemic.

LaFond, who lives in Silver Spring and represented her birth country, Dominica at the Olympics, secured gold in the women’s triple jump. She was previously a teacher at John F. Kennedy High School while also competing as an Olympian. LaFond returned from Paris this week and plans to visit Dominica later this month to celebrate. She is looking forward to some rest and recovery before world championships next year.
