Sligo Creek Parkway and Trail Set for Closures for Purple Line Construction

Portions of Sligo Creek Parkway will close temporarily starting around Sept. 16, for the construction of the Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line Light Rail Project. The project involves placing light rail tracks and reconstructing the intersection at Wayne Avenue and Sligo Creek Parkway. Montgomery Parks will also implement roadway improvements during this period.

The Purple Line is a 16-mile light rail system connecting New Carrollton to Bethesda, with completion expected by 2027.

While the Sligo Creek Trail will mostly remain open, some short-term closures will occur for trail improvements. Detours will be in place, and trail users should avoid closed sections.

The parkway closures will happen at different times. The section north of Wayne Avenue will close in fall 2024, while the portion south of Wayne Avenue will close in 2025. Each closure is expected to last about two months. Specific closure dates will be announced as the project progresses.

The closure schedule is as follows:

  • September-November 2024: Sligo Creek Parkway (north side) from Schuyler Road to Wayne Avenue.
  • December 2024: Sligo Creek Trail from Schuyler to Wayne Avenue will close for repaving.
  • Spring 2025: Sligo Creek Parkway (south side) from Piney Branch Road to Wayne Avenue.
  • Summer 2025: Sligo Creek Trail from Piney Branch Road to Dale Drive Neighborhood Park bridge.

Signs will detour vehicular traffic and pedestrians around the work zones. For full construction updates, visit purplelinemd.com.
