According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a small earthquake (magnitude 2.3) was reported at 12:51 a.m. Tuesday centered just west of Rockville.
According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was on the golf course of the Lakewood Country Club and just south of Lakewood Elementary School.
There have been no reports of injury or damage.
On X, residents in Rockville, Potomac, North Potomac, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Damascus, Silver Spring reported hearing and/or feeling the earthquake. Some did not hear or feel anything and slept through it they said.
The strongest confirmed tremor in Maryland was a 3.1 magnitude event in 1978 near Hancock, Md in Washington County according to MGS. In 2011, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Richmond was felt in Montgomery County and up and down the East coast.
