About two weeks after a driver struck a student walking near South Lake Elementary School in Montgomery Village, the school will be assigned a crossing guard, according to Action in Montgomery (AIM).
A driver struck a pre-teen pedestrian near the school around 8:50 a.m. Nov. 2, according to County Fire and Rescue Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer. The victim had non-life threatening injuries. AIM said this is the third time a South Lake student was struck on the way to school since 2019. The county-based community organization advocates for issues and communities including South Lake Elementary School.
On Wednesday morning, the group met with Montgomery County Police and the offices of County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Will Jawando at the elementary school, AIM shared on Twitter.
“As a result of that meeting, [Montgomery County Police] is assigning a crossing guard to South Lake,” AIM said.
The school will have a crossing guard through the end of the year and the organization said it will find permanent solutions for students following the school’s renovation.
