At approximately 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 9, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to an automatic fire alarm call from Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 16235 New Hampshire Avenue. The church sustained major damage, likely totaling over $5 million, but no injuries were reported.
When MCFRS arrived at the church, they encountered smoke and high heat in the sanctuary area. According to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer, around 75 firefighters were on the scene by 4:45 a.m.
Police have determined that the fire began in the sanctuary area due to an unknown electrical malfunction. It is not likely related to severe weather or storms.
