State, County See Uptick in Covid-19 Cases

Covid-19 is circulating once again which could be the start of a summer surge. The number of hospitalizations across the state has doubled in recent weeks.

Montgomery County Chief Health Officer, Dr. Kisha Davis, said 92 patients were hospitalized across the state as of July 1. That number was 40 on June 7.

Currently, 17 people are hospitalized with the virus in Montgomery County. Davis said “the County has seen gradual increases in test positivity, wastewater levels of COVID-19, and reports of emergency department visits.”

While the numbers are beginning to increase, Davis said it is not at the level it was during last winter’s surge.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the number of cases during April and May was at the lowest level than at any time during the pandemic.

New Variants

Researchers say the new KP.2 and KP.3 variants appear to be driving the recent transmissions. Most people contracting Covid-19 right now have a certain level of immunity through vaccinations and previous infection, so if they become sick, they are usually able to recover well.

However, Davis cautions individuals with compromised immune systems, including seniors, remain most vulnerable to serious illness and should take precautions during times of elevated transmissions.

Vaccines and Precautions

She recommends people stay up to date with Covid-19 vaccines. She also suggests people take precautions when visiting others who may be more at risk of getting sick. More families will spend time together during the July 4th holiday, and should be aware of the recent uptick in cases.

Guidelines If You Get Sick

If a person does contract Covid-19, the CDC recommends you stay at home for at least 24 hours and away from others until your symptoms resolve or a person is fever-free.

At that point, they can resume normal activities but should still take precautions around others for an additional five days. That includes masking and washing hands frequently.
