As of Monday morning the state deployed almost 3,000 people to treat and plow roads as a state of emergency continues during the winter storm.
Maryland has already seen seven inches of snow in certain parts, Gov. Wes Moore said during a press conference Monday afternoon.
Please stay off the roads, advises Russell Strickland, Secretary of the state Department of Emergency Management.
“If you do not need to drive, stay off the roads,” Strickland said. He advises residents to listen to their local emergency management office. Dress warmly, check on vulnerable family and friends, bring pets inside if possible, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
Residents should keep a supply of driveway salt — or even non-crumbling kitty litter — ready to go for icy surfaces, Strickland said. If using salt, the county transportation department advises “about a coffee cup’s worth should pretty much treat an average sidewalk in front of your house, or your driveway.”
State transportation department Secretary Paul Wiedefeld tells residents to go to the Maryland Transit Administration website for the latest information on service for MARC, Metro, and bus. If residents are planning a trip or picking someone up from the airport, they should contact the airline for information on landings and departures.
