Montgomery County’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day tribute is scheduled for Monday, Jan 16 at 4 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore.
The annual celebration spotlights Dr. King Jr’s life through music, art, dance, and performance. A visual arts exhibit prepared by Montgomery County students interpreting the theme “We Are Martin” will be on display.
The program will focus on King’s determination, devotion, courage, compassion and perseverance—and how everyday people who possess the same attributes can have a positive impact in the community.
There will be performances by Temika Moore featuring Lorree K. Slye, Burl Binion and Duane Moody. Morre is a nationally known inspirational soul performing and recording artist who weaves together strains of fold, jazz, soul, R & B and gospel. Also performing will be Jeremy Winston Chorale, one of the nation’s leading ensembles.
There will also be a dance performance by the Akhmedova Ballet Academy, as well as a choral performance by the 150-member M. Sparks Matsunaga Children’s Choir.
As in previous years, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Committee and the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights produce the tribute.
Toiletry items will be collected at the tribute and will be distributed to local shelters. The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights and the Volunteer Center are partnering with Interfaith Works to collect the items, they are asking community members and those who attend the commemorative program to bring for donation toiletry items for the County’s homeless shelters. Suggested items for donation include portable shower caddies (for carrying items), bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, lotion, Chapstick, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, new wash cloths and towels.
