The 45th student member of the Montgomery County Board of Education (SMOB) was sworn in Friday.
Arvin Kim, a rising senior at Walt Whitman High School, was elected in April.
“In just the past few years, students and educators have faced adversity in a global pandemic, unbridled gun violence in our schools, rampant inequality and a persisting mental health crisis,” he said during a swearing-in ceremony Friday afternoon.
“I firmly believe that the changes we make now and the policies we pass today will shape the future for education in MCPS,” Kim said. His term will last the 2022-2023 school year.
Kim replaces Hana O’Looney, who graduated from Richard Montgomery High School last month.
The SMOB is a voting member but cannot vote on negative personnel actions.
