Students at Fairland Elementary School in Silver Spring found a gun in a trash can on school grounds, according to school officials.
“I want to assure you that I take this incident very seriously, as the safety of all our student and staff is very important to me,” wrote Principal Dr. Lakeisha Lashley in a letter to the school community. “We are committed to maintaining a secure and nurturing environment where all students can thrive academically and socially. I will continue to work closely with Montgomery County Police and our security personnel as they investigate and support is with this incident.”
A group of students found the gun during recess earlier this week and reported it to school staff. Police confiscated the firearm and no injuries were reported.
It is unclear where the recovered weapon came from.
