Sugarloaf Mountain, a popular hiking spot, is closed until further notice as the owners reassess security needs on the property.
Stronghold Incorporated, which owns the property in Frederick County near the border with Montgomery County, announced that a person attempted to enter the Strong Mansion on Aug. 19 between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Physical evidence was collected at the scene, including a DNA sample, and security camera footage is being reviewed, according to Stronghold Incorporated.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office at 301-639-4866.
According to a message on its phone system, information on when the mountain will reopen will be listed on its website.
Stronghold Incorporated is a nonprofit organization that was organized in 1946 by the late Gordon Strong. It owns and operates the property, including the mountain which has an elevation of 1,282 feet and a vertical measurement of 800 feet.
Money for upkeep and improvements comes from a trust fund, membership dues and gifts and bequests.
It is a Registered Natural Landmark.
