A 38-year-old Washington, D.C. man was arrested Thursday in connection with a sexual assault at the Silver Spring Transit Center on Colesville Road.
Metro Transit Police announced the arrest of Tiwan D. Sweet and charged him with attempted first degree rape and attempted second degree rape, according to a news release.
The attack occurred around 3 a.m. as a female victim was waiting at the transit center. According to police, the suspect and victim did not know each other.
Sweet is accused of trying to force himself upon the victim and physically assaulting her. Police said she yelled for help.
Montgomery County Police responded and intervened in the attack, according to the news release.
“This is a heinous crime against an innocent victim and the community is now safer with this arrest,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo. “We appreciate the assistance of Montgomery County Police who arrived quickly on scene and stopped the suspect.”
Sweet’s preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 19.
