Montgomery County police arrested a suspect for possession of a handgun after he was involved in a hit-and-run collision in Silver Spring, according to a press release.
The suspect was identified as Mario J Rios, 21, of Schrider Street in Silver Spring. He is being charged with criminal offenses to include possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun by a prohibited person due to prior criminal convictions, and second-degree assault for assaulting.
At approximately 11:10 p.m. on Sunday night, police responded to a call from a witness who had observed a hit-and-run collision. On Silver Spring Avenue, a Dodge Caravan struck a parked car and drove off. The witness watched the driver park two blocks away in an apartment parking lot and exit the vehicle.
Police officers responded to the scene and located the van used in the hit-and-run. A male, matching the description given by the witness, approached the officers. Rios had cuts and bruises on his hands, a bump on his forehead, and he was carrying a set of Dodge vehicle keys.
The officers ordered Rios to stop, but he fled on foot. Rios assaulted one officer with his elbow as the officers pursued him. He was taken into custody following a brief chase. Officers located a handgun in Rios’ jacket pocket
Rios was transported to the Central Processing Unit and is currently being held without bond.
