If a Takoma Park Police officer hands a youngster a ticket, it’s not a citation. Under Operation Chill, officers have partnered with 7-Eleven to offer free Slurpees.
The idea is to reduce future crimes and build rapport between children and police, who will use the opportunity to speak about making good decisions, being kind and doing the right thing.
The idea is to catch a youngers caught doing something positive, like helping someone else, deterring a crime, wearing a helmet while bike riding or even just having a nice conversation with a police officer.
“It’s an icebreaker, a way to encourage dialogue in a non-threatening, non-law enforcement situation,” according to a news release from Takoma Park police. Each ticket can be redeemed for a free small Slurpee.
Operation Chill was developed by 7-Eleven and is a national program offered in the summer when communities are more likely to see increases in loitering, shoplifting and graffiti.
