Takoma Police Arrest 2 for Stealing Car, Possessing Weapons

Takoma Park Police arrested two people in connection with a stolen vehicle and firearms possession.

Paul Eugene Smith, 33, of Silver Spring, was charged with stealing a vehicle.

Franklin Orellana-Ortiz, 17, of Germantown, was charged with possession of firearms, firearms on his person and possession of a stolen shotgun. He has been charged as an adult.

Takoma Park officers were patrolling the 7400 block of New Hampshire Avenue near the Red Carpet Inn on Jan. 25 at 9 a.m. when they saw a vehicle that had been reported stolen by Prince George’s Police Department.

Following an investigation, officers found that the stolen vehicle had arrived at the property around 3:00 a.m. The officers approached the vehicle and found it occupied by Smith. He was unable to explain his possession of the stolen vehicle.

Police learned of another person associated with Smith who had exited the stolen vehicle and walked to a room at the Red Carpet Inn earlier that morning.

As authorized agents, officers knocked on the door and were let inside the room. They observed a partially open drawer containing a rifle magazine and the frame of a firearm in plain view. A search of the room yielded more firearms, some loaded and a stolen shotgun, according to a police news release.

Police frisked Orellana-Ortiz and recovered a loaded firearm from his waistband. The firearm had one round in the chamber and 17 in the magazine. Additionally, another loaded firearm was located in a drawer between two beds.

Orellana-Ortiz is prohibited from possessing firearms, according to police.
