Gaithersburg native Jordan Hawkins is a national champion. The 20-year old sophomore scored 16 points Monday night – including a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch – as the UConn Huskies won the NCAA men’s title game, beating San Diego State 76-59 in Houston.
Hawkins was named to the All-Tournament Team.
“That’s for all the kids in Gaithersburg, Maryland that didn’t think they could do it. I did it. Now you can do it,” Hawkins told CBS Sports.

Hawkins – who played at Gaithersburg High School before transferring to DeMatha – became the second family member in two days to win an NCAA title. On Sunday, his cousin Angel Reese won her own national championship when LSU beat Iowa in the title game in Dallas. Reese, who was named the tournament’s outstanding player, is from Baltimore. She played her first two years at Maryland before transferring to LSU. Her brother Julian plays for Maryland.

Hawkins is expected to turn pro this off-season and is projected to be a first round round pick, perhaps even a lottery pick (top 14). The NBA Draft is June 22.
