Saket Soni, a labor organizer who assists exploited migrant workers, will present his book, “The Great Escape” at the Gaithersburg Book Festival, Saturday, May 20. His book tells the story of 500 Indian who aspired to become Americans. They were recruited by a company to work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in rebuilding the New Orleans area. The men were promised green cards and paid $20,000 for the opportunity. Instead, they were subjected to inhumane conditions and forced into labor.
Soni will talk about his book, “The Great Escape: A True Story of Forced Labor and Immigrant Dreams in America” at the book festival.
Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman and founder of the book festival shared his thoughts about “The Great Escape” with MyMCM.
Soni presents at 11:15 a.m. in the Frederick Douglass Pavilion and will be signing books at 12:15 p.m.
