“High-pressure situations like natural disasters often create opportunities for scammers,” said OCP Director Eric Friedman. “Take a moment to verify charities before donating. Ensuring your money reaches the right hands is the best way to support fire victims.”
To help donors make informed decisions, OCP shared these tips:
- Choose Trusted Organizations: Research charities before donating. Use websites like CharityWatch, Charity Navigator, and Candid to verify organizations. The Maryland Charities Database also provides information on charities operating in the state. Contact charities directly to learn about their mission and plans to assist fire victims.
- Watch Out for Imposters: Scammers often create fake charities or websites mimicking legitimate organizations. Double-check website URLs and avoid unsolicited requests claiming you already donated. Fraudulent sites may attempt to steal personal information or install harmful software.
- Be Cautious with Social Media and Crowdfunding: Not all campaigns are legitimate. Verify that funds go to a registered charity or the intended purpose. Crowdfunding platforms may not always ensure campaign validity, so proceed carefully.
- Understand Fund Usage: Trustworthy charities clearly explain how donations will be spent. Confirm what portion of your contribution supports wildfire relief efforts directly.
OCP also advises avoiding cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency donations, as these methods are hard to trace and often targeted by scammers. Keep detailed records, including receipts, to track your donations.
By following these precautions, donors can ensure their support reaches those affected by the wildfires.
