Fentanyl, the highly addictive opioid, has been on the street for a more than a decade now. But at the dawn of 2023, it became apparent it was impacting Montgomery County in a particularly pernicious way. It was killing our school children. After several middle and high schoolers succumbed to the drug on campuses, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) sounded the alarm. In response, MCM created a special program – Fighting Fentanyl where Wendy Winter told us the story of her son Seth’s overdose.
In the months since our show, Fentanyl deaths seem to be trending downward, thanks in part to increased awareness and the widespread distribution of the recovery drug Narcan. Several programs by Montgomery Goes Purple throughout the year drew hundreds of attendees looking for ways to fight the rise of fentanyl use among the county’s youth.
