Top Stories of 2024: Elrich Term-Limited, School Board Incumbents Voted Out

The 2024 general election brought about local changes in Montgomery County.

The county executive was further term-limited and three school board incumbents were ousted.

Voters chose to limit the county executive to two terms instead of three. MCM talked to County Executive Marc Elrich about the results on election night in College Park.

Elrich is currently in his second and now final term after being re-elected in 2022. He later announced he intends to run for an at-large seat on the county council now that he cannot run for a third term.

Also as a result of the election, three incumbent Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) school board members were voted out. Rebecca Smondrowski served 12 years, Shebra Evans served eight years, and Lynne Harris served four years.

This month, three new school board members were sworn-in: Rita Montoya, Laura Stewart, and Natalie Zimmerman.
