The county’s transportation department was nationally recognized for the MD 355 pedestrian crossing project in Bethesda.
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) won a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, per a release Thursday.
The award honors engineering projects at a national level.
The project was finished in Feb. 2022 and took about five years, according to the county. It is meant to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety between sides of Rockville Pike, or MD 355.
It includes a “shallow pedestrian underpass” under Rockville Pike that crosses the roadway, per the release from the county. Roadway surface improvements were also part of the project.
“It increased the capacity of and improved access to the Medical Center Metrorail Station and the parallel kiss-and-ride served by Ride On, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and the National Institutes of Health,” according to the county.
According to the county, thousands cross MD 355 everyday to get to and from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Walter Reed.
Last June, the transportation department received a separate award for the project.
