Travel Options Announced for 3 Month Red Line Closure

Metro plans to shut down the Red Line from Fort Totten to Glenmont starting June 1 for three months. Construction of the Purple Line mezzanine and other work will take place during this closure. The affected stations include Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring, and Takoma.

Metro and regional transportation departments will offer various travel options during the Red Line closures. From June 1 to August 31, free shuttle buses will provide express service between Silver Spring and downtown DC. Shuttle buses will run every 4-8 minutes, ensuring frequent connections to closed stations.

Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, and Silver Spring stations will close throughout the construction. Takoma Station will be closed from June 1 to June 29. During this period, Red Line trains will run every six minutes all day, including rush hours. After 9:30 p.m., trains will continue to run every 10 minutes as usual.

More than seven miles of bus-only lanes will be added on Georgia Avenue between Glenmont and Silver Spring. Signal timing will be adjusted to prioritize buses and reduce shuttle travel times.

Metro will have teams at affected stations to provide information before the closure.
