Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced his Senate campaign Friday, the last day to file for the 2024 election. Democratic Candidate Congressman David Trone (D) said the move was a “desperate attempt” to return Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former President Donald Trump to power.
“He talks about putting politics aside but spent his entire tenure as governor waging partisan attacks through bad policy,” Trone said in the statement.
Hogan stepped down from a leadership position in the No Labels Party in January, according to the Associated Press. The No Labels Party is a third-party movement pushing for centrist policies and bipartisanship.
Trone represents Maryland’s 6th district in the House of Representatives and announced his Senate campaign in May 2023.
However, Hogan is a prominent critic of Trump within the Republican Party. In the now-candidate’s announcement video, Hogan said: “We desperately need leaders willing to stand up to both parties, leaders who appreciate that not one of us have all the answers or all the power.”
Trone also claimed that during Hogan’s governorship he “neglected and failed” Baltimore, advocated for policies that kicked people off of voter rolls, and cut backroom deals to benefit developers like himself.
Hogan will face off seven other Republicans in the May 14 primary, though his announcement is set to put him at the front of the Republican race. Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks are projected favorites in the Democratic primary.
Hogan was the Governor of Maryland from 2015 to 2023.
