2 County Natives Set to Take the Field in Army-Navy Game

The 125th rendition of the Army-Navy college football game will be played at Northwest Stadium in Landover on Saturday. The Washington area is playing host to the game for just the second time ever and the first since 2011.

The Navy Midshipmen, based in Annapolis, feature many players from its home state, two of whom, cornerback Irabonoise Oniha and defensive tackle Chreign LaFond, are from Montgomery County.

Both hail from Silver Spring. Sophomore Oniha played his high school ball at Paint Branch, while the junior LaFond is out of Archbishop Carroll. You may recognize the latter’s name. His sister, Thea LaFond, won a gold medal in the triple jump at the Summer Games in Paris.

Each man has seen action this season for an 8-3 Midshipman squad, with the underclassman Oniha playing in five games, while LaFond saw the field in ten.

Navy will look to slow down 11-1 Army’s dynamic offense, led by quarterback Bryson Dailey and his 29 rushing touchdowns (tied for the most in the nation).

The game kicks off at 3:00 on Dec. 14 at the Washington Commanders’ home field. You can watch live on CBS and Paramount+.
