The University of Maryland suspended its Italy study abroad program on Friday, Feb. 28. This comes after the Center for Disease Control categorized Italy as a Warning Level 3.
Students abroad were directed to the Education Abroad office to receive guidance on their return home. Most students, once home, will be completing their studies online.
“As most students will be completing their work online, we are requesting that they return to their homes away from campus and follow CDC guidelines to self-quarantine for 14 days and seek medical support and advice as needed,” wrote Senior Vice President and Provost Mary Rankin.
Last week UMD also suspended their study abroad program in South Korea due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
In the school-wide email, the university reiterated that there were still no confirmed cases of coronavirus at UMD. According to the statement, UMD is relying on information from sources including the CDC, the World Health Organization and the United States State Department.
Students studying abroad in Japan, which is currently an Alert Level 2, were advised to be prepared in the case of a change in the alert level. The university stated that they were willing to work with students who are currently abroad in a country on Alert Level 2 who have concerns about continuing their studies abroad or who are “immunocompromised.”
“We continue to urge all members of our community at home and abroad to practice measures to prevent infection,” wrote Rankin.
