Unfamiliar Teams Still Alive in High School Football Playoffs

BCC at Churchill nov 17 2023

It’s not uncommon for teams from Montgomery County to advance deep into the football state playoffs. Since 2015, Quince Orchard, Northwest and Damascus have dominated and provided the county with multiple state titles.

This year is a different story.

All three of the traditional powers went upset, leaving some surprise teams like Churchill and Blake on the brink of playing in state title games.

Three County schools — public and private — remain alive in football playoffs.

Good Counsel vs DeMatha, WCAC Championship, Tuesday, Nov 21., 7:00 p.m.: Good Counsel (9-1) defeated DeMatha (9-1) in an overtime-thriller on Oct 13. Now, the Stags get a chance at revenge. This time, the WCAC title is on the line.  The game will take place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

Broadneck at Churchill, State 4A Semifinals, Friday, Nov 24., 6:30 p.m.: For the first time since 1995, Churchill (11-1) won the regional championship and advanced to the state semifinals. They’ll host Broadneck (10-2), who just knocked off Northwest, who ended Quince Orchard’s 39-game winning streak. The Bulldogs topped Bethesda-Chevy Chase behind David Avit’s four touchdowns.

North Point at Blake, State 4A/3A Semifinals. Friday, Nov 24., 2:00 p.m.: With its 16-6 win over Urbana on Friday, Blake (11-0) won its first regional title in school history, advancing to the state semifinals.  Blake battles a North Point team that’s also undefeated, sitting 12-0. The battle of two undefeated squads is this week’s Montgomery Community Media Game of the Week.  The Eagles throttled Frederick, 56-20, to win their region. The winner advances to the state championship game.
