National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The start date is in honor of when Latin American countries began gaining independence.
The American Film Institute Latin American Film Festival, celebrating its 34th year, will show Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese films from Sept. 21 through Oct. 11. at the Concert Pavilion in Silver Spring.
Westfield Wheaton mall will host their third annual National Hispanic Heritage Month event Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. featuring singers and folklore dance troupes as well as celebrities such as Tia Maria and Stefani Gamboa.
The movie Vivo will be played at the Concert Pavilion on Sept. 22. The Latin American animated film showcases how music connects people. Admission is free and people are allowed to bring food and chairs.
