Adela Beatriz Orellana, 26, of Hyattsville, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of theft for stealing the contents of UPS packages.
According to Montgomery County Police, Orellana was employed at the Rockville and Wheaton UPS stores and allegedly stole packages she collected and then sold the stolen contents at local pawn shops.
Police were told of a theft that had occurred on Nov. 21, 2023. The victim stated that he sent five gold coins through the UPS store at 11160 Viers Mills Rd. However, when the package reached the destination, there were only two gold coins, according to the victim.
On April 1, the victim later reported to police that the same two coins were located at a coin shop on Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring.
Following an investigation, police believed that Orellana was the suspect. She turned herself into police on June 26.
While she was released on bail, the detectives determined that Orellana stole property from other packages and have charged her for those crimes as well.
She is charged with theft of between $1,500 and $25,000. Her trial is set for Oct. 3.
There may be additional victims who sent packages through the Rockville and Wheaton. Police ask victims to contact them at 240-773-5476.
