The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Vacuum Leaf Collection Program will begin on Nov. 6.
The program will run for 6-8 weeks, pickups will happen in early November and then a second in December depending on weather conditions.
The collection area is generally south of Bel Pre Road, east of I-270/I-495, and west of New Hampshire Avenue, to the district line according to the MCDOT website.
Residents who wish to participate in the pickups should make leaf piles at the curb and off the street. Piles should not contain sticks or other debris, plastic bags, or be placed near a parked car.
MCDOT will post signs in neighborhoods several days ahead of collection. Signs will stay posted until the end of the second collection in December due to short staffing according to MCDOT.
Leaves collected will be recycled into a soil amendment product called Leafgro. Residents can also drop leaves off at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station to be recycled.
Excess leaves can be picked up during regular recycling if placed in paper lawn bags or reusable containers at the curb.
To look up collection dates residents can use MCDOT’s collection date table.
Homes outside the leaf collection area can find information on how to be included here.
