Van Hollen Presses to Intervene for Marylander Deported to El Salvador

Senator Chris Van Hollen has requested to meet with the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, when he visits the U.S. this week. The Senator hopes to intervene in the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.

In a press release, Van Hollen points out that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a resident of Prince George’s County, was wrongly deported without due process. He was wrongfully accused of being a member of the MS-13 gang and sent to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador.

Recently the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the government must “facilitate” his return but did not impose a timetable on the action. Despite the  court order for his return, the Administration appears to be ignoring that mandate.

Van Hollen adds, ” …if Kilmar is not home by midweek – I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release.”

Here is the text of Van Hollen’s letter to the Salvadoran Ambassador Milena Mayorga.

On Monday, according to multiple news sources, the El Salvadoran president says his country has “no basis” for returning Abrego Garcia. Meanwhile the U.S. states he is a citizen of El Salvador, and they cannot lawfully remove him.
