Vigil Will Honor the Life of Melanie Díaz, Victim of Silver Spring Fire

To honor and celebrate the life of Melanie Díaz, who passed away in the Silver Spring apartment fire on February 18th, the family is organizing a vigil Thursday at 5:00 p.m. outside the building at 8750 Georgia Avenue.

Melanie Díaz died in the early morning three-alarm fire Saturday at Silver Spring Arrive Apartments. Diaz worked for the D.C.-based think tank Aspen Institute. and graduated from Georgetown University.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but he believed that the residents in that apartment had tried to put out the fire themselves and had their door open before calling 9-1-1.

Her family is accepting donations to help with funeral and travel expenses through a GoFundMe page. “Melanie was a ray of sunshine in everyone’s lives. She graduated in 2021 from Georgetown University. After graduation, she began his career in DC and took up residence in Maryland.

The donations will go toward funeral arrangements, as well as travel expenses, since the family had to travel from Florida to Maryland. Donations will also help support them as they will be out of work for an indefinite amount of time,” the page says.
