County Executive Marc Elrich and the Montgomery County Volunteer Center honored 10 individuals and organizations at the 13th annual Montgomery Serves Awards on June 25.
The Roscoe R. Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Awards celebrated leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to the county. Honorees included Catherine Leggett, an advocate for the arts, humanities, and underrepresented communities; Joyce Seigel, an equal rights and fair housing activist; and Greg Wims, founder of the Victims’ Rights Foundation.
The Volunteer of the Year Awards recognized outstanding volunteer service. Wendy Kent, co-founder of Tommy’s Pantry, was named Volunteer of the Year for fighting food insecurity. Tejusvi Vijay, a youth mentor and STEM diversity advocate, was named Youth Volunteer of the Year. The Monitor Group, which supports local nonprofits with volunteer campaigns, was named Volunteer Business of the Year and the AARP Tax-Aide Program was named Volunteer Group of the Year.
The Neal Potter Path of Achievement Awards honored lifetime service by those 60 and older. Bruce Adams, co-founder of the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club, and Mary Canapary, volunteer director of The Lord’s Table who has served 500,000 meals, received this award.
The Inez Zeigler McAbee and William Harvey Zeigler Humanitarian Award went to Warren Fleming, president of the Damascus Connection Committee and a champion of human rights.
