The deadline to register to vote in the May 14 primary election is Tuesday, April 23. This is also the deadline to change party affiliation or update a voter’s address.
All residents of Montgomery County may register to vote if they meet the following requirements:
- County resident
- United States citizen
- At least 16 years of age (one may register to vote at 16 but cannot vote until at least 18 years of age on or before November 5)

Eligible residents may register to vote online at the Maryland State Board of Elections website. Alternatively, residents may text VOTE to 77788 to register. Another option is to register to vote in person at the Board of Elections office at 18753 N. Frederick Ave., Suite 210 in Gaithersburg. The office phone number is 240.777.8500.
Residents who miss the April 23 deadline to register online may choose to register in person during the early voting period (Thursday, May 2 through Thursday, May 9), or on primary day (Tuesday, May 14). Residents need to bring a document that proves residency, which may include:
- MVA-issued license, ID card, Learner’s Permit or change of address card.
- Paycheck stub, bank statement, utility bill, or other government document showing name and current address.
Montgomery County will have 14 early voting centers open Thursday, May 2 through Thursday, May 9 from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. Residents may register to vote or cast their primary ballot at any one of the 14 voting center during early voting.
