The broken 16-inch in diameter water main beneath 7235 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda was removed, and a new section of pipe was inserted, according to WSSC Water.
Beginning at about 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, water service was being restored.
The area temporarily will be covered to steel plates while other utility officials check their lines.
The break closed part of Wisconsin Avenue and shut off water service for residents in the area, including those living at the high-rise Elm Apartments.
