Westland Middle School Wins Snowplow Design Contest

Westland Middle School in Bethesda won the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) “Paint the Plow” contest. Their winning design featured the “Squirtle Squad” from Pokémon and a “Road Runner” theme.

The contest occurs annually during “Public Works Week” to honor essential workers. MCDOT uses this week to highlight the vital roles of its Division of Highway Services employees. A social media campaign recognized public works employees’ contributions to county residents’ safety and quality of life.

The decorated snowplows were displayed at MCDOT’s “Truck Day” event on June 1. Nearly 2,000 attendees in Rockville voted for their favorite snowplow design.

Sixteen county middle schools participated in the contest. Student teams had four days to name and decorate their snowplows. MCDOT provided the snowplows and paint supplies.

Winners of the contest were:

  • First place ($500): Westland Middle School, Bethesda, with the “Beep Beep” Road Runner-themed plow.
  • Second place ($300): Redland Middle School, Redland, with the “Scoopy” Snoopy-themed plow.
  • Third place ($200): Roberto Clemente Middle School, Germantown, with the “Zombinator” Zombie-themed plow.
