Adventist Healthcare White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring is growing. Last week, the hospital opened a new unit on its eighth floor. The unit will provide 30 more beds. It will provide care for patients from the Emergency Department and patients who have undergone a medical or surgical procedure.
“The need for medically necessary services has been consistently higher than our inpatient capacity since White Oak Medical Center opened in 2019,” said Anthony Stahl, the President of White Oak Medical Center.
“This addition allows us to streamline patient flow by moving patients more quickly from the Emergency Department to inpatient units to receive the specialized care they require,” he added.
Medical Center’s History
The Adventist Healthcare White Oak Medical Center is now more than 5 years old. It replaced Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. When Adventist decided to make the switch, it wanted to move the Medical Center to a more accessible place in the White Oak area. The move also was designed to bring more economic development and job growth to the region.
The Medical Center primarily serves patients in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. However, patients from around the region also use the hospital’s services.
Anticipated Future Growth
In 2020, the Medical Center anticipated future growth and began construction of an eighth floor. That paved the way for the latest expansion. Construction began in the spring of 2023 after the hospital received regulatory approval to proceed. Architecture firm, Wilmot Sanz, designed the new unit. The firm specializes in healthcare.
The hospital’s expansion will create new jobs. The Medical Center anticipates adding more full- and part-time positions in nursing, clinical roles and support services.
“The opening of this new unit is an important step in the long-term plans for the robust growth of White Oak Medical Center and the other acute care facilities within the Adventist HealthCare system,” said John Sackett, Adventist HealthCare President and CEO.
“Adding capacity at White Oak Medical Center aligns with Adventist HealthCare’s mission to extend God’s care through the mission of physical, mental, and spiritual healing to the patients we serve at our acute and non-acute facilities,” he explained.
More Services
Besides the expansion on the eighth floor of the hospital, the Medical Center also converted existing rooms on its seventh floor to create a larger, 34-bed intermediate care unit. This unit is designed to provide specific care for patients who need more specialized monitoring and treatment.
