Montgomery County High Schools Score High in U.S. News 2024 Rankings
The U.S. News & World Report recently released its annual Best High School rankings. Walt Whitman in Bethesda ranked No. 139, Poolesville at No. 172, and Wootton at No. 196, making them three of the four high schools in Maryland to rank in the top 200 nationally. Eastern Technical High School in Baltimore County topped Maryland schools, breaking into the top 200 nationally at No. 123.
U.S. News reviews about 25,000 public high schools in the country and ranks nearly 17,660 schools based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. The six factors used to compile a score for each school include college readiness; breadth of college curriculum; state assessment proficiency; state assessment performance in math, reading, and science; underserved student performance; and graduation rate.
Each school’s score was calculated by summing the weighted scores across the six indicators of school quality and then computing a single overall score ranging from zero to 100, which reflects a school’s performance across these metrics. These overall scores indicate how well each school performed relative to others on a national percentile basis. For instance, a school with a score of 60 performed at the 60th percentile among all schools in the rankings.
All 25 county high schools earned spots on the Best High Schools list.
