In six minutes, Karis Hastings of Silver Spring went from finishing a celebration birthday dinner with her family to her sister calling 911 to report the shooting of Hastings’ husband.
On Dec. 21, 2022 at 8:59 p.m., Charles Joseph Reynolds, 62, was shot dead in the stairwell of the Wayne Avenue parking garage in Downtown Silver Spring.
Hastings, along with Montgomery County Police officials, held a news conference Tuesday morning to urge anyone with even the smallest piece of information about events that night to contact police.
“This remains an unsolved active investigation,” said Police Chief Marcus Jones, adding that in other murder cases, police at least can find video of someone fleeing. “We are really at our wits end in this particular incident.”
Meanwhile, county police have increased patrols and more officers are walking in the central business district. Additional portable cameras are being used in the high traffic areas.
Police also are working with Montgomery County Department of Transportation to add cameras in county garages. At the time of Reynolds’ shooting, there were cameras in the garage but none in the stairwell where Reynolds was shot.
“His death is a loss not just for my family, my extended family but the entire community,” said Hastings, noting her husband volunteered at their church, neighborhood pool and with CHEER in Silver Spring. The couple played pickleball together whenever the weather was nice.
They have three daughters, all in their twenties.
Those with information are asked to call 866 411 8277. Callers can remain anonymous.
