Gregory Wims, the director of the Sidney Kramer Upcounty Regional Services, was chosen on the first ballot by members of the Montgomery County Democratic Party to be a state delegate in District 39.
If Gov. Wes Moore approves his nomination, Wims will fill the seat of Del. Kirill Reznik. After more than 15 years representing District 39, Reznik stepped down and is now Assistant Secretary for Inter-Department Data Integration in the Maryland Department of Human Services.
Wims, who was born in Bethesda, has served on numerous nonprofits throughout the county. He founded the Victims’ Rights Foundation, which raises money and provides emotional support to crime victims. That organization provided thousands of dollars to the families of the Washington, D.C. sniper victims.
Wims was the first male Head Start teacher in the county and previously served as president of the Montgomery County Chapter of the NAACP. He also was president of the Maryland NAACP chapter.
Councilmember Gabe Albornoz tweeted his congratulations, noting, “Your leadership and community advocacy have served Montgomery County, and now the State of Maryland.”
Sen. Nancy King and Delegates Gabriel Acevero and Lesley Lopez, all Democrats, represent District 39, which covers the areas of Gaithersburg, Germantown, Montgomery Village, Clarksburg and the Town of Washington Grove.
