Students from the Society of Women Engineers at Wheaton High School showed off their award-winning electric racecar at GreenFest in the City on Sunday, April 23.
Co-President Christina Eayrs explained how the girls built the vehicle with sealed lead acid batteries and a hub motor to compete at both the Washington, D.C. Electric Vehicle Grand Prix and a grand prix in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
After facing some adversity in Abu Dhabi, the girls were able to strategically drive their car to achieve the most laps around a track on one battery charge during a certain period of time.
The club has built three other electric vehicles for racing, Co-President Gabriela Beltran said. GreenFest allowed the club to display their vehicle and share new ways to optimize battery use in cars.
