Woman Fatally Injured in Fire at Senior Living Facility in Gaithersburg

A resident died from injuries sustained at a fire at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg Friday morning.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it appears that a female resident was cooking and her clothes caught on fire according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue (MCFRS) Assistant Chief Dan Ogden.

She tried to put the fire out and ran into the hall where her neighbor tried to help, but the woman succumbed to her injuries. Her neighbor was evaluated but not taken to the hospital, Ogden said.

The fire was “relatively small” and was put out quickly he said, adding that most residents were able to return to their rooms within 45 minutes. The neighboring rooms were not damaged but were left vacant longer while fire officials investigated.

The fire occurred on the sixth floor of the eight-story senior living facility on Russell Avenue.
