Women Return Wednesday to Shelter Damaged by July 4th Fire

About one month after an electrical fire broke out at Interfaith Works’ Crabbs Branch Women’s Center, the residents will return Wednesday.

The center provides shelter and services for more than 30 clients who previously experienced homelessness.

On July 4, a fire broke out at the center in Derwood. There were no injuries, but 35 women and 16 staff members were displaced. The women were provided a place to live while the building was cleaned and repaired.

Montgomery County Services to End and Prevent Homelessness (SEPH) assisted the staff with transportation and securing additional showers and laundry facilities. SEPH also facilitated collaboration with the Red Cross, which provided cots and bedding items, as well as three days of meals immediately after the fire.

The temporary facility did not have a full kitchen, but local organizations and individuals stepped up and donated every meal for the past month.

“We are grateful to the public, our partnering agencies, the media, and our donors for their work to ensure the safety and care of our clients during this traumatic time,” said a spokesperson for Interfaith Works.
