WSSC Water has lifted the essential-water-use-only request for 1.9 million customers in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The announcement came Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Water system demands and pressure are stable, and storage levels have returned to normal. The Potomac and Patuxent Water Filtration Plants continue meeting customer demand.
The essential-water-use-only request began due to a surge in water main breaks and cold weather, which increased the risk of pressure loss. From January 1 to 13, WSSC Water reported 220 breaks and leaks, with 184 occurring in the past six days. On Sunday, January 12, a 24-inch main break and a 12-inch main break threatened storage reserves.
Crews and emergency contractors worked around the clock to repair the breaks. WSSC Water asked customers to limit water use to stabilize the system.
WSSC Water uses essential-water-use-only requests sparingly. The measure prevents pressure loss, which could affect fire protection and trigger a Boil Water Advisory.
Customers should report suspected water main breaks by calling WSSC Water’s Emergency Services Center at (301) 206-4002 or using the Report a Problem feature on the WSSC Water Mobile App.
WSSC Water thanks customers for their cooperation and patience. Their conservation efforts prevented a Boil Water Advisory and maintained fire protection across both counties.
