Youth Can Shape Public Policy in Councilmember for a Day Program

Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, chair of the Education and Culture Committee, has launched the ninth annual Councilmember for a Day challenge. The contest invites middle and high school students to share their views on public policy through short video essays.

Created in 2016 by former Councilmember Craig Rice, the program encourages youth to voice their opinions and engage with local government. Jawando continues the tradition, giving students the chance to propose solutions to issues that affect them.

Participants submit videos on public policy, focusing on how the issue impacts their community. The winner will join a Council lunch, receive a Council proclamation, and serve as an honorary Councilmember for a Day.

Last year’s winner, Folashade Epebinu from Seneca Valley High School, highlighted affordable childcare. Her video emphasized the need for better communication and access to childcare in the County. “Daycare is essential for so many working parents and guardians in Montgomery County,” Epebinu said. She mentioned a program at her school that supports families with childcare costs while training students interested in education.

Councilmember Jawando praised Epebinu’s work. “Young people are aware of the issues impacting their friends, family, and neighbors. We need to make sure their voices help develop solutions for today and beyond.”

The challenge is open to students in grades six through twelve. Video submissions are due by Thursday, Nov. 7. Learn details and how to submit an entry, here.
