Montgomery County has long been a welcoming home for immigrants from around the world. It’s one of the reasons our community is so vibrant, resilient, and forward-thinking.
In the latest episode of MCM’s YouthTalks Podcast, our talented NexGen member Heda takes the mic. She’s a student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Heda hosts a deeply personal and powerful conversation about being a teenage immigrant in the county.
About the podcast
Heda’s joined by her classmates Hana and Juliana. She leads a discussion about the immigrant experience from the perspective of young people who’ve lived it. They reflect on the emotional journey of leaving behind a familiar world and stepping into a new one. Often, they didn’t know the language, culture, or how their peers would perceive them.
This isn’t just a story of struggle—it’s one of strength.
The teens confront misconceptions about their backgrounds and adapt to new social norms. They describe the emotional toll of feeling “different” and the pressure to fit in. They also share the small, everyday victories of finding your place.
Today, more than 35% of the county’s residents are foreign born. Even more speak at least one language besides English. Montgomery County is now one of the most diverse counties in the United States.
“This episode is a reminder that every immigrant story is layered with courage, resilience, and a desire to belong,” says Heda. “We wanted to show what it really feels like to be a teenage immigrant in Montgomery County and that not all students who come to the U.S. are treated the same.
Their conversation is more than informative—it’s inspiring and educational.
Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of immigration and a renewed appreciation for diverse voices in Montgomery County.
At Montgomery Community Media, we believe in lifting up these voices. By giving young immigrants a platform—like our NexGen creator Heda and her peers—we help break down barriers. We challenge stereotypes and celebrate the courage it takes to join and contribute to our rich community.
